Huntington = who are we? America's Great Debate, pp79-80

[...] At the end of the 19th century, however, America emerged as a global power. This produced two conflicting developments. On the one hand, as a great power, America could not ignore the realitties of power politics. To maintain its status and security it would presumably have to compete in a hard-nosed manner with the other great powers in the world, as it had not had to do and been uanble to do during most of the 19th century. At the same time, its emergence as a great power also made it possible for America to promote abroad the moral values and principles on which it had aspired to build its society at home and which its weakness and isolation in the 19th century had prevented it from promoting abroad. The relation between realism and moralism thus became the central issue of American foreign policy in the 20the century, as Americans, in McDougall's words, redefined their country from "promised land" to "crusader state".

Walter McDougall - Promised Land, Crusader State: The American Encounter with the World Since 1776
https://www.amazon.com/Promised-Land-Crusader-State-Encounter/dp/0395901324

In this episode of Intelligence Matters, host Michael Morell interviews journalist Robert Draper, author of To Start a War: How the Bush Administration Took America into Iraq. Draper and Morell discuss the key players, events and decisions that led to the George W. Bush administration's invasion of Iraq more than 15 years ago. Draper details the positions held by top policymakers and U.S intelligence agencies, and explains why he believes certain failures came to pass.

Stenly » ugh

If you’re white, live in the United States, and a distant relative has uploaded their DNA to a public ancestry database, there’s a good chance an internet sleuth can identify you from a DNA sample you left somewhere. That’s the conclusion of a new study, which finds that by combining an anonymous DNA sample with some basic information such as someone’s rough age, researchers could narrow that person’s identity to fewer than 20 people by starting with a DNA database of 1.3 million individuals.
